We are seeking a New Zealand based Lawyer who is keen to develop their Insurance career in regulatory compliance and operational risk management in New Zealand and Australia.

The opportunity…

We are seeking an early career Lawyer for a full-time permanent position. You will ideally be based a few days per week at our stunning Takapuna office, however we are open to remote work in across New Zealand for the right candidate.

Reporting to the Head of Risk and Compliance Australia and New Zealand, you will be part of an independent function sitting in the 2nd line of defence with responsibility for overseeing the business’ compliance with its regulatory obligations, whilst guiding day to day operations to operate within the risk management framework.

To be successful in this role you will need to influence and collaborate with colleagues at various levels of seniority to achieve the desired compliance and risk management outcomes.

You will be responsible to:

  • Support the New Zealander and Australian Risk and Compliance team to ensure that business operations and practices align with the risk management framework, company policies, regulatory obligations and overall risk appetite
  • Advise, support and challenge the business in how they are managing their obligations, incidents, and risks
  • Manage and monitor our existing prudential, financial services and/or licensing obligations
  • Consult, design and implement the business’ action plan in response to new regulatory standards, directions and approaches
  • Assist in developing practical business solutions to meet ongoing compliance obligations and timeframes
  • Drive the timely identification, management and reporting of incidents and breaches
  • Encourage good risk and compliance habits to all stakeholders with the aim of maintaining the team’s status as trusted advisors

About you…

This is an ideal role for an early career Lawyer seeking a rewarding and challenging work in a collaborative and supportive culture.

Ideally, you:

  • Hold a current practising certificate issued by the New Zealand Law Society
  • Have 1 to 3 years Post Qualification Experience (PQE) in financial services regulation and/or insurance litigation obtained in-house or private practice
  • Are a critical thinker with strong written and oral communication/ interpersonal skills
  • Are comfortable to present ideas, perspectives and issues to all types of stakeholders across the business including senior executives and the board
  • Have a high level of personal integrity as well as the ability to professionally handle confidential matters
  • Are a self-starter who is comfortable working both independently and as part of a small team and a rapidly changing environment
  • Understand financial services regulatory frameworks
  • Will be happy to adapt to working with colleagues in different times zones and willing to service the core hours of 10:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday (New Zealand time)

In addition to the above, previous experience in the sales, service, claims, administration, compliance, risk and/or audit teams of a financial institution or professional services firm will be highly regarded. Whilst experience in General Insurance is preferred, we are open to talking to candidates with any legal experience in financial services and/or insurance litigation.
