The role

We are looking for an In-house Patent Attorney to work as part of our Legal Team to audit and manage protection of intellectual property generated within the company or in which the company has an interest. You will do this in collaboration with Douglas’ in-house IP Counsel and external advisors.

You will support Douglas’ General Legal Counsel and in-house IP Counsel to provide first class information and strategic advice concerning intellectual property issues of potential commercial significance to the Company.

You will work closely with the New Product Development team to identify, research and strategically advise on areas of potential risk concerning intellectual property, in particular patents, in relevant markets. You will pull together a combination of original work and management of outside advisors, including overseas attorneys/agents as required.

You will assist in choosing APIs and identifying formulations and indications which offer maximum benefit with regard to earliest possible market entry, and co-ordinate freedom to operate searches.

You will work with internal teams and internal and outside counsel (including overseas advisors and commercial partners) to identify and appropriately protect original intellectual property (in particular, patents) created within or on behalf of the company or in which the company has an interest. You will effectively manage that protection including guiding prosecution of patent applications in multiple jurisdictions via overseas counsel.

In the event of the Company becoming involved in an intellectual property related dispute, you will work with internal stakeholders, General Legal Counsel, in-house IP Counsel and external counsel as required to manage and resolve that process so as to obtain the best possible commercial results for the Company.

Are you ready to be part of it?

You will be/have

  • A LEGAL professional –You will be degree qualified in a relevant science discipline. You will be a Registered Trans-Tasman Patent Attorney and be eligible for a New Zealand legal practicing certificate. You have experience dealing with overseas counsel.
  • PHARMACEUTICAL experience – is key, you have intensive experience in pharmaceutical patent drafting and prosecution with an emphasis on US and European rights.
  • A frequent SYSTEMS USER – you will be familiar with and competent in using major public patent information databases (eg Public Pair, Espacenet, WIPO patent collections). Ideally, you will have some familiarity with information databases such as Cortellis to conduct initial high-level assessments of early-stage concepts.
  • A confident DECISION MAKER – you will be able to make decisions and solve problems and provide clarity and context.
  • A COLLABORATOR – you will work closely with internal teams including New Product Development, Clinical Research and Regulatory Affairs as well as external partners, counsel and advisors. You are able to influence and persuade with confidence.

You will have resilience, strong attention to detail and be able to adapt your style. You will be organised and articulate and have well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
