Refugee and Immigration Legal Advice Service Manager – RILAS Kaihautū

Community Law Wellington and Hutt Valley (CLWHV) is a registered charity providing free legal advice and assistance to those who cannot access other legal services in Wellington & the Hutt Valley. This work also includes the provision of free legal education in our communities, promoting law reform in the interests of our clients, and providing restorative justice services in the Greater Wellington region.

We are looking for an experienced lawyer to lead our Refugee and Immigration Legal Advice Service in Wellington and Lower Hutt. The job is permanent, 30 hours/week, and is based from our Lower Hutt and Wellington office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of the RILAS Kaihautū are:

  • Staff and volunteer support – ensuring the RILAS team is supervised, supported and mentored. Supervising and, when required, providing advice at weekly drop-in advice sessions
  • Managing RILAS services and caseloads in collaboration with the RILAS team
  • Quality assurance of RILAS legal services
  • Occasionally assisting with funding applications and reporting

The successful candidate will have a current New Zealand practicing certificate and ideally they will be qualified to practice on their own account or be ready to undertake Stepping Up. Experience with refugee and immigration law preferred. Ideally they will have experience supervising a legal team. Our constitutional goal of Treaty-based operations means they will also have a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi based partnership. Sensitivity to, and knowledge of, te reo Māori and tikanga Māori is also desirable, though not essential.
