Rōia Hapori Community Lawyer - two positions

Kia hiwa ra!

Community Law Wellington and Hutt Valley (CLWHV) is a registered charity providing free legal advice and assistance to those who cannot access other legal services in Wellington & the Hutt Valley. This work also includes the provision of free legal education in our communities, promoting law reform in the interests of our clients, and providing restorative justice services in the Greater Wellington region.

We are looking for two community-minded and values-driven lawyers to join us! We are looking for one full-time, permanent addition to our general legal team, and a full-time fixed-term addition to our Pou Whirinaki – Services to Māori team. The mahi will be based from our Lower Hutt and Wellington offices, as well as outreach locations.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the Rōia Hapori are:

  • Legal Assistance: The delivery of legal information and advice, and some ongoing assistance/representation to individuals, whānau, hapū, iwi and community organisations. The Rōia Hapori will also provide advice and supervise volunteer lawyers at drop-in sessions.
  • Legal Education: Assisting in the development and delivery of legal education
  • Community Development: Assisting the rest of the Pou Whirinaki team in developing appropriate and innovative legal services to meet the unmet legal needs of Māori in the region.

The successful candidates will be admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and will have a working knowledge of areas of law relevant to Community Law’s clients. They will have experience working in or alongside community groups, ideally working with Māori stakeholders and organisations.

Knowledge of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga, and comfort in tikanga Māori environments is highly desirable but we’re primarily interested in candidates’ commitment to the Kaupapa and fluency in te reo Māori is not a prerequisite for the role. Our constitutional goal of Treaty-based operations means they will also have a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi based partnership.

CLWHV offers an exceptional work environment with a strong collective employment agreement, generous leave entitlements and as much flexibility and responsibility as you need to get the job done. Our aim is to make Community Law the best place to work for the best people!
