Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

  • Exciting opportunity to be part of MBIE's expanding Small Business Policy team
  • Do you want to contribute to the sustainable, inclusive and productive growth of small businesses in New Zealand?

  • Do you want to help shape the work programme of a growing team?

About the Small Business Policy team

Small businesses are pivotal to the growth of the New Zealand economy and are the backbone of our communities, cities and regions. Small Business Policy provides advice to the Minister for Small Business and drives the strategic policy agenda. This agenda is guided by the Small Business Strategy, as prepared by the Small Business Council.

The team is going through an exciting period of growth. The Government has identified small businesses as one of their five priorities for economic recovery and MBIE has dedicated an additional four positions to the team going forwards. This creates real opportunities to reset how we think about small business policy, how we influence policy decisions that affect small businesses and how we partner to support Māori small businesses. MBIE – Hīkina Whakatutuki – wants to lift our small businesses and contribute to sustainable, inclusive and productive growth.

About the role

We have two full-time permanent positions available: one at Principal Policy Advisor and the other Senior Policy Advisor level.

What's in it for you?

As a Principal Policy Advisor:

  • Partner with the Manager on the team's strategic direction. We have an opportunity right now to redefine the scope and role of small business policy in New Zealand. Come and be part of that.
  • Use, and hone, your strategic influencing skills. A big part of the team's role going forwards is going to be influencing policy across government to ensure that policy and legislation are designed with small businesses in mind. After all, 97% of New Zealand's businesses are small.
  • Lean into te ao Māori. You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori, te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it applies in the public sector and help to promote the use of tikanga and te reo Māori internally.
  • Lead the development of new legislation or other major policy initiatives. We have several large projects on the go so there are opportunities to provide thought leadership and project management.
  • Partner with the Manager to build the team's policy capability. As a Principal Advisor you will work with the Manager to deliberately build the team's core policy skills.

As a Senior Policy Advisor:

  • Undertake complex policy analysis. Lead the development of innovative policy options.
  • Lead policy projects, particularly in a legislative and regulatory setting (experience is desirable).
  • Lean into te ao Māori. You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori, te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it applies in the public sector and help to promote the use of tikanga and te reo Māori internally.
  • Enhance the overall policy capability of the team through coaching and mentoring team members.

Who are we looking for?
