The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet's (DPMC's) purpose is to advance an ambitious, resilient, and well-governed New Zealand.

The Corporate Legal Services Team provides advice on policy and machinery of government, legislative drafting and a wide range of corporate matters including contracts and procurement to business units within the department and the National Emergency Management Agency, a departmental agency hosted by DPMC.

This is an opportunity to take the next step in your career and move into a role where you will be the key DPMC legal contact for the Health Transition Unit, supported by the DMPC Corporate Legal Services team.

The Health Transition Unit is developing the policy and design of the system operating model, advice on the establishment of new entities and legislative change associated with the wide-ranging review of the Health and Disability system. An amazing opportunity to be part of the heart of the future-proofing of our health and disability services.

This is a dynamic and fast-paced role within a strong professional team where you will work closely with the Executive Leadership team. You will be focused on providing senior level advice and supporting the department on increased legislation reform work being undertaken, in particular the Health and Disability System Review, and other issues facing the department and the Corporate Legal Services Team. This includes:

  • Providing advice on policy matters, the establishment of new entities, and legislative change associated with Health and Disability System review
  • Assisting with the coordination of drafting instructions and associated advice relating to the reform workstream
  • Provision of general legal advice and advice on contracts and corporate legal matters

This position is fixed term until 30 June 2022 and is Wellington-based. All DPMC roles are flexible by default and a positive work life balance is encouraged.

What you will bring | Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu

  • At least 7 years’ post admission experience, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Extensive knowledge of the machinery of government with a high-level understanding of the legislative process
  • Public law expertise and experience drafting contracts, as well as knowledge of government procurement rules and processes
  • Confident, with the ability to build, maintain and leverage relationships at all levels
  • Admitted to the Bar in New Zealand with a current practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain one)
