Senior Legal Counsel - Bay of Plenty

A unique opportunity for an experienced lawyer to join the independent regulator of the New Zealand kiwifruit industry at KNZ’s office in Mt Maunganui. This role would suit a candidate with either inhouse or private practice experience in regulatory compliance and statutory interpretation.

About the role

As Senior Legal Counsel, you will primarily be involved in the monitoring and enforcement of the Kiwifruit Export Regulations 1999 and providing high quality legal advice to the Chief Executive and KNZ Board. You will interact with key industry groups in the New Zealand Kiwifruit industry and build and maintain strong working relationships to encourage proactive engagement.

You will work closely with the Chief Executive and Board to support the strategic and operation of KNZ in its role as an independent regulator. You will co-ordinate and manage the engagement of external legal providers and ensure an effective compliance framework is in place supported by policies and processes.

You will handle Official Information Act requests and consider and highlight risks in the regulatory process and decision making. You will draft and review various legal documentation related to KNZ’s role as regulator including decisions, guidelines, commercial contracts, and approvals. You will analyse relevant legal and regulatory developments and their impact on the industry.

What we’re looking for

  • A minimum of 5-7 years PQE and a current practising certificate
  • High-performing lawyer across a range of disciplines
  • A compliance and regulatory background, or government involvement, would be an advantage
  • Strong analytical skills in respect of statutory and regulatory frameworks
  • Excellent relationship building skills and a confident communicator
  • Perceptive and proactive person who can provide timely and pragmatic legal advice across the full range of the industry’s activities
