Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join the University’s Legal Services team and provide strategic and operational legal advice on a wide range of issues across the University.

As Senior Legal Counsel, you will be expected to operate independently in areas of significant complexity and importance for the University (including intellectual property, contract drafting and negotiation, statutory interpretation, privacy, public law and administrative matters, property and construction, governance, student conduct, information technology, and dispute resolution). You will have responsibility for substantial legal issues and/or work-streams and the ability to stand in for the General Counsel from time to time.

You will provide a mentoring role to staff within the Legal Services team and will contribute to activities to ensure the University always operates within the law. The Senior Legal Counsel will also lead key projects both within the team and in conjunction with key stakeholders across the University.

You will bring your initiative, judgement, experience and can-do attitude to a varied and dynamic environment that provides plenty of opportunities and challenges. You will have:

  • Relevant tertiary legal qualification.
  • A current New Zealand practising certificate as a Barrister and Solicitor (or the ability to obtain one).
  • Experience in advising on a wide range of legal matters with at least 5 years PQE.
  • Proven understanding of legal principles and practices with experience of providing these as practical advice to organisational leaders and managers.
  • Excellent commercial acumen and contracting and risk management experience.
  • Proven experience in managing relationships and ability to persuade and influence others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The Legal Services team is responsible for provision of all legal advice and services to the University. The team enables the University to achieve its strategic objectives, aims to “make life easier” for University staff, and champions simplicity over complexity. You will gain experience working in a small but busy team and enjoy an opportunity to lead and influence others.
