Senior Solicitor - Whanganui

Reporting to our General Counsel, this role would suit an experienced legal professional seeking a new challenge. You will be responsible for a number of dynamic and interesting tasks and will be working with a wide range of people including the public, elected members and Council staff, as well as deputising for the General Counsel as required.

The ideal candidate will be able to work autonomously and efficiently, and have a proven ability to concisely summarise complex issues for all areas of Council. You will be an energetic and proactive member of the legal team who is dedicated to delivering high quality legal services across Council. You will engage and build relationships with internal client groups to provide advice and support in the general area of criminal and regulatory litigation (including all court, tribunal, and
mediation matters, outside of those arising from the exercise of Council's regulatory functions).

In addition you will have proven experience and be able to prepare and conduct prosecutions in the District Courts under regulatory legislation such as the Dog Control Act 1996, Food Act 2014 and Health Act 1956. You will observe obligations under the Criminal Procedure Act 2011 and the Solicitor General's Prosecution Guidelines and ensure Council is a model enforcement litigant. For the right candidate there will also be opportunities to be involved in appeals and civil enforcement proceedings.

As our Senior Solicitor you'll bring a minimum of 5-7years' PQE working for a law firm or within a similar in-house role. You'll also:

  • be a qualified and experienced solicitor with a current NZ practising certificate
  • be a confident communicator who can navigate challenging circumstances
  • be able to quickly review documents and apply sound judgement
  • be able to work independently
  • have experience in litigation or prosecutions
  • have stellar contract drafting skills
  • have an eye for detail
  • be a skilled negotiator
  • have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • be a people lover and excited to be part of our wider sociable Council team
  • have an excellent sense of humour - this is non-negotiable!
