The legal team, where this role is based, provides legal advice across the whole range of Ministry of Education responsibilities and services to both frontline and National Office staff.

About the Role | Mō te tūnga

As an employment specialist, you will operate in a high-performing legal team to help shape the future of Education. This role will provide expert legal advice across the Employment Relations portfolio and a range of employment work including bargaining, ER matters, pay equity and regulatory compliance.

You will get unique employment law exposure in this position and some of your work will include:

  • Advising on complex matters, attending meetings, contributing to strategy, drafting and reviewing documents, offering leadership and direction to others, identifying risk and the need for policy and regulatory change, attendance at mediation, litigation preparation and liaising with external counsel
  • Providing support to the Ministry's Pay Equity Programme to enable it to effectively and efficiently administer pay equity claims lodged, and resolve gender-based undervaluation
  • Providing support to teams that bargain the Ministry’s 19 collective agreements, covering more than 100,000 school employees
  • Providing support to the Ministry's Payroll Programme to ensure compliance with the Holidays Act 2003, including resolving past non-compliance and ensuring future compliance

The Ministry of Education take flexible working seriously and provide employees with seamless IT allowing them to work flexibly and remotely with ease. This position is full-time but part-time applicants will also be considered.

What you will bring | Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu

  • 5+ years of post-admission experience in employment law
  • Able to work autonomously
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Research, investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • A high level of integrity, initiative, flexibility, and responsiveness
  • Able to effectively develop working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangata whenuatanga
  • A current practising certificate or the eligibility to obtain one
