Gallaway Cook Allan – Getting Straight to the Point Together

Gallaway Cook Allan is a well-established Otago-based full-service law firm that prides itself on getting straight to the point. We take a direct, efficient approach to recruitment and how we develop our people, how we work together in teams, and how we work with our clients to build close, lasting relationships.

Our staff are central to our success. Our size means our people get the benefit of the development opportunities of a larger firm, but with the flexibility and work/life balance of a smaller firm. We are family friendly and inclusive – we support and trust each other. We currently have a staff of around 80 people, based over two offices (Dunedin and Wanaka). There are currently 12 partners in total, with a 50/50 gender split.

You will work alongside Devon Miller (Partner) as part of a cohesive, supportive, and high performing team. Devon is highly experienced and builds strong relationships with clients and colleagues.

About this role

This newly created role provides an opportunity for an experienced lawyer to break out and grow their career. With a large existing client base, you will be able to focus on ensuring we provide specialised but grounded and efficient service. Your expertise will be recognised with freedom to build a strong working environment.

You will be able to:

  • Mentor junior lawyers and develop their technical skills
  • Maintain a cohesive, trusting team environment
  • Build lasting relationships with families
  • Become highly experienced in an area of law that attracts much academic interest as the case law around the Trusts Act 2019 evolves
  • Work in a high-demand area of law
  • Be supported by experienced lawyers in an inclusive and collaborative environment
  • Plenty of room to progress your career, with Partnership prospects

Day to day work involves meeting with trust families, developing strategies for asset protection and succession, advising on existing trust arrangements, implementing trust strategies given changes to family circumstances and changes in legislation. Your team will engage clients in regular meetings to review and maintain their asset strategy as the law evolves and in response to changing family circumstances.

What you will bring

  • Have a preferred PQE of 8+ years' experience
  • Someone with technical expertise in Trusts and Succession Law
  • Someone is diligent and energised to take on and support a wide client base
