Solicitor General - Cook Islands

The Government of the Cook Islands invites applications from suitably qualified senior lawyers for the position of Solicitor General in the Crown Law Office in Rarotonga.

The Crown Law Office provides legal advice and services to the Government, including the King’s Representative, the Prime Minister, Cabinet, Government departments and statutory bodies.


The Solicitor-General is the principal legal adviser to the Government of the Cook Islands.

He/she will manage and head the Crown Law Office under the Crown Law Office Act, be responsible for the provision of legal advice and counsel to Government including the King’s Representative, Cabinet, the Prime Minister, Ministers of the Crown, the Ombudsman, Heads of Departments, other Government entities and various statutory bodies.

The Crown Law Office is also responsible for the conduct of criminal prosecutions, civil litigation and providing legislative drafting services to Government.

The successful applicant will have extensive experience in any of the following areas: civil, commercial, criminal or public law litigation at all levels, as well as appellate advocacy. Applicants with mediation experience or graduate qualifications in business or commerce is desirable. He/she must already be admitted to the Bar in a Commonwealth country and qualified for admission to the High Court of the Cook Islands.

The ideal applicant will have an understanding of Cook Islands culture and experience working in a Pacific Island environment. 

Applicants with less than 12 years post admission experience are unlikely to have the skill set required by this senior appointment.

Salary Range: Min $100K to Max $130K (Appointment at the appropriate level within this band is dependent on experience and other criteria outlined in the Job Description)

The appointment will be for a term of three years. The successful applicant would be expected to commence work as soon as possible.
