The Ministry of Justice has produced a new video which aims to ensure child witnesses feel safe and supported throughout the court process.

The five-minute Being a Witness video replaces an old child witness video which was out of date.

Key messages in the new video include the importance of telling the truth, that it’s OK to feel different emotions, and reassurance to children that they will be supported throughout the court process.

"The video is very engaging, personable and appropriate for children," says Penny Hoy-Mack, who manages the Victims and Prevention Services team in Commissioning and Improvement.

"The narrator is friendly and informs children about who the different people in the court are, what children may like to bring with them on the day, and the importance of their role as a witness."

The video has been filmed in English and Te Reo Māori and has English subtitles for hearing-impaired viewers. The video is for use in court but can also be viewed through the Ministry and Victims Info websites.
