This article is over 3 years old. More recent information on this subject may exist.

The recently formed Lawyers For Climate Action NZ Inc is calling for lawyers and other members of the legal community concerned about change change to join.

Membership is open to anyone with a law degree (no practising certificate is required) with an annual membership fee of $50 to cover administration costs.  New members can sign up online at https://www.lawyersforclimateaction.nz/join-us

The group held its first AGM in June 2019. It is made up of lawyers who have come together for the purposes of:

  • Raising public awareness and understanding of the threat of climate change;
  • Advocating for legislation and policies to ensure New Zealand meets or exceeds its commitments under the Paris Agreement and achieves net zero carbon emissions as soon as possible; and
  • Facilitating free or reduced cost legal assistance to community groups working to fight climate change.

The organisation has a website at www.lawyersforclimateaction.nz. It says there is no obligation on members to accept pro bono work and both active and non-active members are welcome.
