The Office of the Ombudsman says the Department of Corrections has decided to undertake a case review of the management of a prisoner at Auckland's maximum security prison, after concerns were expressed by Chief Ombudsman Judge Peter Boshier over the use of a tie down bed.

"The use of the tie down bed was noted during recent visits to the prison conducted by the Ombudsman's Office," the statement says.

"The matter was drawn to the department's attention and Judge Boshier raised his serious concerns about the prisoner's management."

As well as commencing a review of the case, the department has undertaken to provide weekly updates to Judge Boshier on progress, as well as access to any information and premises as requested by the Office of the Ombudsman.

"The fact that a review by the Department has been commenced does not limit any additional action that Judge Boshier may decide to take pursuant to his independent investigation and inspection roles under the Ombudsmen Act 1975 and the Crimes of Torture Act 1989."
