ACC reports on surgical mesh-related claims

This article is over 3 years old. More recent information on this subject may exist.

ACC has released a report on ACC Treatment Injury Claims: Surgical Mesh-Related Claim Data from 1 July 2005 to 30 June 2017.

The report follows an ACC review of all ACC surgical mesh-related claims from 1 July 2005 to 30 June 2014. The 2015 review was made publicly available.

Some changes to the systems used by ACC resulted, and all surgical mesh-related claim data was retrospectively reclassified.

ACC says this retrospective update means it is now able to provide an additional breakdown of surgical mesh-related claim data. This is outlined in the document which has now been released and covers claim data over 12 fiscal years.

"ACC does not have a regulatory function. However, we have a role in passing information to the relevant regulatory authority where issues of safety are raised. The regulatory authority can then make decisions that relate to medical device regulation," it says.

"ACC will provide Medsafe with the retrospective update of its surgical mesh-related claim data from 1 July 2005, and will continue to provide this additional level of information from now on."
