Letters to incoming Ministers
The New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa has written to several incoming Ministers about some of our key law reform priorities:
- Letter to Hon Judith Collins, Attorney-General: we have raised concerns about the process followed when Parliament is considering a bill subject to a section 7 Bill of Rights report.
- Letter to Hon Nicole McKee, Minister of Courts: our letter outlines issues relating to the health and safety of court users, the need for greater investment in courthouses, and the importance of consulting local stakeholders (including Law Society branches and local practitioners) about proposed changes to courthouses.
- Letter to Hon Erica Stanford, Minister of Immigration: we have emphasised the importance of following proper policy development processes, and urged the Minister to progress the review of the Victims of Family Violence Visa, and to consider options for accepting Refugee Family Support Category Tier 2 sponsor registrations in the immediate future.
- Letter to Hon Brooke van Velden, Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety: we have urged the Minister to progress any work underway to create a framework for regulating lay employment advocates, and requested an update as to whether the review of the Holidays Act will proceed.
- Letter to Hon Matt Doocey, Minister for ACC: we have recommended undertaking a comprehensive review of the Accident Compensation Act, and identified several areas where improvements can be made to the existing legislative framework in the immediate future.
- Letter to Hon Simon Watts, Minister of Revenue: our letter recommends using the Generic Tax Policy Process as the preferred framework for developing tax policy and legislation.
- Letter to Hon Andrew Bayly, Minister for Commerce and Consumer Affairs: we have asked the Minister to progress the review of the Copyright Act, and encouraged a full review of the impact of artificial intelligence on intellectual property rights.
