Consultation opens on ticket reselling

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has released a discussion paper on the issues raised by ticket reselling in New Zealand.

MBIE is seeking written submissions on the issues raised by 5pm on 18 April 2019.

The discussion paper is based on initial research and some stakeholder interviews, and outlines some possible options to address consumer concerns around ticket reselling.

Some of MBIE's proposals where feedback is sought include:

  • Imposing a price cap on resale tickets;
  • Requiring information disclosure from ticket resellers;
  • Imposing a ban on ticket-buying bots;
  • Undertaking joint industry-government action to raise awareness of the issues and make commitments to improve the ticketing system.

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi says while misleading and deceptive behaviour is already prohibited under the Fair Trading Act 1986, he is concerned that it doesn't go far enough towards protecting consumers.
