Provisional figures from the New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa show the legal profession has reached a new milestone, with 18,018 lawyers as at 30 June 2026.

The figures represent the highest number of lawyers recorded in Aotearoa New Zealand. Of those lawyers, 15,868 are barristers and solicitors, while 2,150 are barristers. A further 1,477 lawyers are practising overseas.

Chief Executive Katie Rusbatch said the figures reflect a profession that continues to grow and adapt to the needs of consumers of legal services. "Reaching more than 18,000 practising lawyers is a significant milestone for the profession. Lawyers play a vital role in supporting access to justice, upholding the rule of law and serving communities across Aotearoa."

Ms Rusbatch said the growth highlights the strength of the profession and the importance of continuing to support lawyers at all stages of their careers.

"As the profession continues to evolve, the Law Society remains focused on supporting lawyers and helping to maintain public confidence in the legal profession and the services it provides.”

The figures are provisional and will be confirmed when we publish our Snapshot of the Profession 2026.
