No NZ SIS section 4ID(1) warrants in second half of 2016

Director of Security Rebecca Kitteridge has issued a section 4ID Authorisations Interim Report for the period from 1 July to 31 December 2016.

The report is issued pursuant to section 4IE of the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service Act 1969. Section 4ID allows the Director of Security to authorise persons to carry out certain activity without an intelligence warrant or visual surveillance warrants in situations of emergency or urgency.

This power is subject to a number of oversight and reporting requirements, including an obligation to provide an interim report to the Minister in Charge of the NZSIS as soon as practicable after each year ending on 31 December in relation to the 6-month period from 1 July to 31 December.

The interim report which has been tabled in Parliament and which is dated 20 February 2017 states that during the period 1 July 2016 to 31 December 2016, no authorisations were issued under section4ID(1) of the NZSIS Act.
