The New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa acknowledges with sadness the passing of Sir John Henry KNZM KC PC, who has died aged 94. A former Court of Appeal Judge and one time Vice President of the New Zealand Law Society, Sir John left an enduring mark on the law, the courts and the legal profession through decades of service and leadership.
Admitted to the Bar in 1955, Sir John established himself as one of New Zealand's leading commercial litigators before being appointed Queen's Counsel in 1980. Over a career that spanned almost five decades, he served as a lawyer, judge and legal leader, earning widespread respect for his intellect, integrity and commitment to justice.
Sir John served as Vice President of the New Zealand Law Society from 1980 to 1981. He was a strong advocate for professional excellence and played an influential role in the legal community.
In 1984 he was appointed to the High Court, where he helped establish Auckland's fast-track Commercial List. He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 1991 and served until his retirement in 2004.
Sir John's contribution to the law was recognised through his appointment to the Privy Council in 1996 and as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the judiciary.
Highly regarded by colleagues and practitioners alike, Sir John was known for his sharp legal intellect and courtesy. Counsel who appeared before him recall a judge who rigorously tested arguments while treating everyone who came before the court with kindness and respect.
Sir John also took pride in seeing later generations follow him into the law. In 2023, he returned to the Auckland High Court to sit alongside the presiding judge for the admission of his granddaughter Katie to the Bar, describing the occasion as bringing his career "full circle".
Sir John died on 24 July 2026. He is survived by his wife Jennefer, their three children, grandchildren and wider family.
