Results of lawyer recordkeeping survey released

This article is over 3 years old. More recent information on this subject may exist.

Research into lawyer recordkeeping has found that just over half (56%) of lawyers who participated were familiar with their recordkeeping obligations under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act (Lawyers: Conduct and Client Care) Rules 2008.

Another third (27%) felt that they were "maybe" familiar.

The research was carried out by New Zealand Law Society Research Librarian Nicola Stedman in September 2016. Ms Stedman carried out an online survey as part of her study for a Masters degree in Information Studies. The survey resulted in 57 responses. A summary is available here.

A relatively high proportion of respondents - 70% - said they would either definitely or probably like more recordkeeping guidelines to be published for law practitioners.
