Te Au Reka will change the way lawyers interact with the courts

The transition from paper-based court processes to Te Au Reka, New Zealand’s new digital case management system, marks one of the most significant modernisations of the courts in decades and will transform the way lawyers interact with the justice system.

At the heart of this change is the new Courts Portal, which replaces many manual and paper-based processes with a streamlined digital experience. Lawyers and their clients will be able to file documents, make payments, track case progress and access court information online, all in one place. Information entered once can flow through the court process, reducing duplication and helping to improve the consistency and accuracy of court records.

Behind the scenes, the same digital case record will support registry staff and judicial decision-making, creating a more connected court system where decisions, updates and case information move efficiently between the courts and court users.

Te Au Reka is a joint initiative of the judiciary and the Ministry of Justice, designed to create a more accessible, efficient and resilient court system that is fit for the future.

Watch the demonstration to see the future of court administration in action. Following a case through five key stages, it showcases how Te Au Reka will simplify interactions with the courts, improve visibility of case progress and create a more seamless experience for lawyers and court users alike.

Te Au Reka will be rolled out in the Family Court in March 2027.
