Portia Law announces promotions

Portia Law has announced the following promotions: Maria Roestenburg to Senior Associate, Mataara Newson to Staff Solicitor, and Kathryn Leafe to Staff Solicitor.

L-R: Maria Roestenberg, Kathryn Leafe and Mataara Newson

Maria Roestenberg has been with Portia since 2018 and is a member of the litigation team. She has built an in-depth knowledge around the Oranga Tamariki Act in particular, among the variety of other Family Court legislation. Maria is also involved in the mentoring of junior lawyers.

Kathryn Leafe joined the firm in 2024 and has worked supporting the litigation and legal response teams. She has recently moved in the Staff Solicitor role after her recent admission to the Bar. Kathryn started her legal career in a commercial law firm in the City of London, prior to working in criminal justice and eventually national leadership roles in both the UK and NZ in social services, mental health and addiction NGOs. She has been involved in drug law reform at a national and international level.

Mataara Newson spent much of adult life in Singapore, working as a management executive for an international publisher. While there, she had the opportunity to attend a number of litigation events which gave her a taste for the law. She volunteered for several years with Victim Support Services and was recognised for her services to the community. She began working for Portia in January this year as a Legal Support Officer and has recently moved into the Staff Solicitor role.
