Jacob Barry joins the firm as a partner in Auckland, fresh from his post as a partner at another New Zealand firm, where he led the competition and consumer litigation practice. He specialises in regulatory and commercial litigation and holds a track record as counsel appearing in high‑stakes regulatory matters.
Jacob Barry (LLB (Hons) / BCom (Canterbury), LLM (Harvard)) is a trial advocate with expertise in commercial regulatory disputes. He has also conducted over 80 criminal trials in the District Court and High Court in both criminal and regulatory matters. He sits on the prosecution panels for New Zealand’s Commerce Commission and Serious Fraud Office and serves as the Deputy Chair of the Sport Integrity Commission's Disciplinary Panel. Jacob has led a range of high‑profile matters, including representing the Commerce Commission in recently filed cartel proceedings against Harcourts Group and proceedings against Winstone Wallboards Ltd for alleged anti‑competitive rebate practices.
His extensive trial experience includes acting in New Zealand's first criminal cartel proceeding (R v Mardom Limited), representing Godfrey Hirst in greenwashing proceedings against Bremworth, and acting as lead counsel for the Crown in the criminal proceedings arising from Operation Beverly.
