Rachel Opie joins Kate Sheppard Chambers
Rachel Opie has recently joined Kate Sheppard Chambers.
Rachel is an experienced lawyer with particular expertise in New Zealand public law and international public law. She has deep knowledge of working with government, government and law-making processes, international organisations, and international courts and tribunals. Rachel can assist clients with finding solutions to a wide range of public law and international law issues.
Her extensive experience in New Zealand and internationally has included roles in private practice, the New Zealand government, the New Zealand Law Commission, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the International Criminal Court, and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. She has advised on national and international commissions of inquiry. Most recently, before moving to the Bar, Rachel was a Crown Counsel and leader of a public law team in the Crown Law Office. Rachel is an Evaluator for the International Bar Association-International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition and mentors junior lawyers.
Rachel particularly enjoys working on emerging, complex issues that require new and creative solutions. Rachel can provide advice and guidance on issues across the spectrum of public law, including statutory interpretation, decision-making, regulatory processes, legislative and policy development, and the implementation of international legal obligations in domestic law. She can undertake reviews and inquiries. Through her international law practice, she can assist clients with matters relating to international humanitarian law, international criminal law and international human rights law, and international mechanisms for accountability.
