Law Society, we, our or us means the New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa
Materials mean learning materials in print or digital form or any other materials provided at our events.
Member means a member of the Law Society and Membership means membership of the Law Society.
Membership T&Cs mean the Law Society’s general membership terms which can be found here.
Non-Member means an individual who is not a Member.
Organisation means a firm, chambers or entity where you are employed.
These event terms and conditions (Terms) are for any events held by the Law Society including collegial events, conferences, education events, webinars, short courses, events held by the Law Society’s Sections, Branches, or Law Society Continuing Legal Education (Events). These Terms are in addition to any other terms we have in place for the use of our websites or any Membership T&Cs.
Certain Events may have specific Event terms and conditions, and, if there is any inconsistency between specific Event terms and conditions and these Terms, then the specific Event terms and conditions shall prevail.
All prices are in New Zealand dollars and are exclusive of GST. Credit card fees or surcharges may also apply.
Registration confirmation and instructions for accessing or attending the Event will be emailed to you at the address provided once payment of the due amount is received by us in full.
Attendance at any Event is subject to first making full payment.
You will receive a confirmation email with your registration details. If you pay by credit card, you will receive your receipt after you complete the registration process; otherwise, you will receive your receipt on payment.
If you are making a booking on behalf of another person, you confirm that you are authorised to make any Membership declaration and they consent to you accepting these terms and conditions on their behalf.
The Law Society Member registration rate is available for current Law Society Members only. To be eligible for this rate, you must be a Law Society Member.
If you are unsure about whether you are a Law Society Member, please contact membership@lawsociety.org.nz before proceeding with your registration.
If any booking is made using the Law Society Member registration rate for a person who is not a Member, we may invoice you the difference. You must pay any such additional amounts within 10 business days after receiving the invoice or prior to the start of the Event if earlier.
If you register as a Member but your Membership lapses or you are not a Member at the time the Event takes place, we reserve the right to charge you the difference between the Member price and Non-Member price.
If your circumstances change and you can no longer attend the Event, you may contact us to cancel your Event registration. If you are unsure who to contact please call us on 04 472 7837.
Unless specific terms apply for a particular event, our Event fee refund policy is as follows:
Non- attendance on the day of an event is deemed a cancellation, and no refund will be paid.
Compassionate considerations for refunds of Event fees or transfer to another date, if possible, because of illness, injury, or bereavement will be made at the complete discretion of the Law Society.
If you are unable to attend an event, please contact us if you would like to request a substitute person from within your Organisation to attend in your place.
Substitutions will be at our discretion. Subject to receiving reasonable notice, we will do our best to accommodate such requests; however, we reserve right to first prioritise other individuals who are on our waitlist, individuals who are Members, or charge an administration fee or agree to the substitution with conditions. Note any Non-Members who are substituted are to pay the Non-Member Event fee for their attendance. If a substitution is not possible, then the Event fee refund policy above will apply.
We will work with our caterers to accommodate the dietary needs of the substituted attendee subject to the caterer’s terms and conditions.
The Law Society shall not be responsible for any delay or failure in performance of its obligations in connection with the Event to the extent such delay or failure is caused by events beyond its reasonable control, such as fire, flood, industrial disturbances, government orders, pandemic, acts of God, acts of terrorism, the availability of the venue or other similar causes which do not arise from any fault on the part of the Law Society or its subcontractors (Force Majeure). By registering for the Event, you acknowledge and accept the possibility of the Event being moved to a virtual format and also accept that this will not be valid grounds for requesting a refund of your Event fee or any other fees, expenses or losses which you may incur as a result of such change. Your registration will be valid for both formats of the Event.
You agree and acknowledge that cancellation of the Event pursuant to a Force Majure event will not constitute impossibility of performance or frustration of the agreement between us in connection with the Event and that in such circumstances, the terms of this section will apply instead of Subpart 4 of the Contract and Commercial Law Act 2017.
In the event the Event is cancelled or postponed by the Law Society for Force Majeure reasons, the Law Society shall not under any circumstances be liable to attendees for any damages, costs or losses incurred in connection with the Event such as transportation costs, accommodation costs or any other forms of financial loss.
Event registration information will be used for purposes related to your attendance at the Event, including, as applicable, registering your attendance at any social events, processing payments, producing name tags, monitoring attendance, sending you Materials and verification of attendance, and for communicating with you about the Event. We may use third parties for providing booking and Event management services and an Event mobile application (App). Please check any third-party privacy policies before providing your personal information to a third party. Any use of an App will be subject to the terms of use for that App.
Audio, video recordings and/or photographs may be taken at the Event – please refer to the Audio / video recordings/ photography clause below.
Your name and contact details may be disclosed to sponsors of the Event. If there are any sponsors, there is an opportunity on the registration form for you to indicate that you do not wish your name and contact details to be disclosed to sponsors.
We may request your dietary requirement on the registration form. If so, these details will be passed on to the caterers. We will work with our caterers to accommodate any requested dietary needs subject to the caterer’s terms and conditions.
You have the right to request access to and correction of your personal information held by the Law Society. Further information about how the Law Society handles information, including personal information, is set in the Law Society’s Information Handling Policy which can be viewed at lawsociety.org.nz/privacy.
Photographs / videos / audio recordings may be taken by us or on our behalf during the Event. If you attend the Event, you may appear in these photographs / videos / audio recordings. You agree that Law Society may use them for Law Society marketing, promotional or other business purposes, such as Law Society’s communication channels including social media pages.
You may not take any audio or video recording or photos of all or any part of the Event without express permission from Law Society and any person found doing so without permission will be removed from the Event.
Our Events are to support the Law Society’s representative and regulatory functions and are held in a manner which is respectful to all who attend them.
We may, in our sole discretion and without any obligation to refund the Event fee, restrict or refuse admittance to or remove from the Event anyone whom in our opinion is behaving in a manner that could be disruptive to the Event, the presenters or any other attendee, or whose actions may bring the image or reputation of the Law Society or the Event into disrepute. This may include posts on social media.
At certain Events, we may provide name badges / lanyards. If these are provided, then they must be worn while attending the Event. If you fail to wear your Event name badge and lanyard during the Event activities, our representatives may refuse to admit you or remove you from the Event.
The views or opinions expressed by any Event attendee, presenter, speaker, exhibitor or sponsor are not necessarily those of the Law Society. All Event attendees, presenters, speakers, exhibitors and sponsors are solely responsible for the content of any and all presentations, advertising and online content.
It may be necessary for reasons beyond our reasonable control to alter the advertised content or to add, replace or substitute advertised presenters. We reserve the right to do this at any time without any obligation or liability to refund any part of the Event fee.
The health, safety and wellbeing of event attendees is paramount. Attendees must follow all health and safety instructions and signage at Event venues. Attendees must always conduct themselves professionally, abide by the event venue’s host responsibility policy and exercise good judgement with respect to alcohol consumption at social networking events.
No refunds will be provided for on demand content or Materials once your order is completed.
