Giltrap Group is a leading New Zealand-owned automotive group, driven by the love of cars and a strong commitment to our people. Our Legal function plays a trusted, hands-on role, working closely alongside our teams to enable sound decision-making and manage legal risk across the business.
We are now seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join our team on a fixed term 12-month contract, ideally commencing in May. This on-site role is based at our Support Office in Grey Lynn, Auckland, and is for up to 32 hours per week to be worked across 4-5 days.
About the Role
As Senior Legal Counsel, you will provide high-quality, pragmatic legal advice across our vehicle importing, distribution and retail businesses across New Zealand. This role offers significant variety with a strong focus on commercial contract drafting and review, alongside advising on consumer law issues.
Your responsibilities will include:
Provide practical, commercially focused legal advice on a broad range of matters
Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, with a strong focus on managing risk and enabling business outcomes
Advising on consumer law, privacy and advertising matters as they arise in our retail and distribution environments
Supporting legal aspects of business initiatives, projects and change activities
Managing the engagement of external counsel for specialist or high-risk matters
Build legal capability within the business by coaching stakeholders to understand risk, priorities and practical solutions
Contribute to building a sustainable and well-embedded in-house Legal function, including improving processes, templates and ways of working
About You
Our ideal candidate is a senior, commercially minded lawyer who enjoys providing clear, pragmatic legal advice that manages risk while achieving commercial outcomes. You are comfortable operating with autonomy, thrive on variety and bring technical excellence with strong people skills.
You will further have:
A law degree and a current New Zealand practising certificate (or ability to obtain one) with 10+ years' PQE, ideally with a mix of law firm and in-house environments
Strong corporate/commercial law expertise, with high capability in drafting, negotiating and interpreting contracts
Experience advising on consumer law matters with exposure to competition, privacy, or banking & finance law beneficial but not essential
Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively at all levels of the organisation and with external counsel
Ability to manage multiple priorities with a high degree of autonomy and sound judgement.
