Legal Aid Provider Certificate of Standing

A Legal Aid Provider Certificate of Standing is required by the Ministry of Justice for those applying to be a legal aid provider.

You can apply for a certificate issued by the Law Society. Please note that certificates of standing are valid for 3 months only. Certificates must be filed with the Ministry of Justice within this 3 month period.

Please note you will need to allow 1-2 weeks processing time.

The Certificate of Standing covers open complaints, upheld complaints and disciplinary tribunal matters from 1 August 2008 and any disciplinary charges before the New Zealand Law Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal under the Law Practitioners Act 1982.

What to supply

To speed the process, you will need details of:

  • your date of admission in New Zealand
  • your place of admission (ie, which New Zealand High Court)
  • names of any/all former district Law Societies from which you have held a practising certificate
  • the years you held these practising certificates

The cost is payable at time of application.


We will post your certificate by ordinary post within New Zealand and by Airmail to overseas applicants. Transit times can vary but as a guideline please allow 3-5 days for New Zealand postage and 3-10 days for overseas postage.


You can pay this directly to the Law Society's bank account (No: 123140.0119103.07) or mail the cheque to the Law Society.

If you pay by bank transfer you must include your name and the reference "LA COS" on the bank detail.
