In June 2025, the New Zealand Law Society’s Wellington Law Library is relocating to 126 Lambton Quay while the Wellington High Court undergoes a seismic upgrade. The entire collection is being moved to the new location.
Continued access to Library resources
Exact dates for the relocation are to be confirmed but we’re expecting the library to be closed for two weeks during the move. We are currently working to get the Wellington District Court set up with a library computer and Wi-Fi so that lawyers will continue to have access to most of the Library online subscriptions during Court hours. The Library research services (charges apply) and the e-book borrowing service Lexis Red (currently no additional charge) will continue to be available.
As the Lawyers Room is restricted to lawyers only, if you are working for a lawyer and regularly come in to use the Library but do not have a practising certificate yourself, you will need to contact the Library for assistance while the Library is closed. Similarly if you require information from any of our hardcopy resources you will need to contact the Library.
Access cards
Wellington lawyers will need a new access card to enter the Library at its new location (this is consistent with access to our other research libraries in Auckland and Christchurch) . Apply for your new access card today.
Once we have your application we will let you know when you can collect your card. Cards will be activated once the Library is set up in the new premises. If you currently have an access card there will be no additional charge (so long as the original card is returned by the end of August). The cost for a new card otherwise is $20 (+GST) until the end of June, at which point it will go back up to the regular cost of $25 (+GST).
Lawyers visiting from outside of Wellington may be eligible for a temporary access card. If you wish to make use of our Wellington Law Library, please contact us in advance so that we can support you.
