About the role 

National Infrastructure Funding and Financing (NIFF) is seeking an accomplished Senior Legal Counsel to join its high-performing legal team in Auckland.

This role offers the rare opportunity to work at the intersection of government, finance, infrastructure and investment, advising on complex transactions that enable the delivery of critical infrastructure across Aotearoa. You will play a key role in structuring and negotiating innovative funding and financing solutions, supporting major procurement processes, and providing strategic legal advice on matters of national significance.

Working closely with senior executives, government agencies, local authorities, private sector investors, developers and iwi partners, you will contribute to projects that drive economic growth and create lasting benefits for communities throughout New Zealand.

This position offers a broad and intellectually stimulating practice, combining sophisticated transactional work with strategic commercial, governance and policy advisory responsibilities. You will enjoy a high degree of autonomy within a collaborative, agile and purpose-driven environment.

What we’re looking for:

We are interested in speaking with commercially astute lawyers who bring:

  • A minimum of 8 years’ PQE, gained within a leading law firm, in-house environment, or a combination of both
  • A current New Zealand practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain one) 
  • Experience advising on infrastructure projects, project finance, banking and finance, major commercial transactions, construction, public sector procurement, or related areas would be preferred/advantageous but not a prerequisite
  • Proven expertise drafting, negotiating and managing complex commercial agreements involving multiple stakeholders and competing interests 
  • Exceptional commercial judgement, with the ability to identify practical solutions and balance legal, commercial and strategic considerations 
  • Outstanding relationship management and communication skills, with the confidence to engage credibly with senior decision-makers 
  • A collaborative, pragmatic and adaptable approach, coupled with the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic environment 
  • Experience working with government agencies, local authorities, iwi organisations, investors or infrastructure sector participants will be highly regarded
