The Institute of Legal Professional Studies (IPLS) is a not-for-profit, private training organisation.  We thrive on preparing law graduates to enter practice, ready to make a positive contribution to the profession and the public.  

We’re growing and are looking for outgoing, enthusiastic and experienced lawyers who would like to join us to support our onsite student cohorts.  Your role would involve working alongside law graduates to teach them a comprehensive range of practical legal skills so that they can gain admission to the bar and step into their career with confidence.  It requires a strong coaching and mentoring approach and a genuine interest in supporting the next generation step positively into the legal industry.  You would be responsible for a class of students onsite during the full-time course at our modern classrooms in either central Auckland or Wellington with senior instructors alongside to support you all the way. 

The role is a fixed-term contract, we require Auckland and Wellington based instructors for a 4-month contract, Dec- April (with a break over the New Year) instructing the entire course or a 3-month contract instructing part of the course. The course commences at the end of January 2027 and continues to mid-April. The role would include training in December 2026.

Mō te Tūranga | About the role 

Key responsibilities would include: 

  • Coaching and mentoring students as they learn practical legal skills through a series of real-life, client-focused tasks 
  • Responding to student queries and providing support as they progress through the course  
  • Bringing to life the course content with examples from your own practice 
  • Managing student participation in the IPLS course tasks 
  • Reviewing document-based tasks submitted by students to the learning management platform and providing timely, individualised feedback 
  • Providing individualised oral and written feedback on live, performance-based tasks 
  • Marking assessments in accordance with specific criteria 
  • Participating in moderation procedures as required 
  • Liaising with the IPLS National Office team 

Ko koe tēnei | About you 

You’ll have: 

  • An LLB degree, with 5+ years’ experience as a Barrister or Solicitor 
  • Excellent communication skills with strong attention to detail 
  • Strong planning and organisational skills 
  • A people centric approach to delivery, with drive, energy, and a can-do attitude 
  • The ability to respond to the needs of a diverse group of graduates 
  • An awareness of tikanga principles 
  • Experience with teaching or mentoring (desirable) 
  • Experience with either commercial law or litigation (both desirable)
